A Brief History of the International Theological Review, Concilium

2015-08-01 13:30:36

Founded in1964 and published since 1965 by leading theologians of the time, Y. Congar, H. Küng, JB Metz, Karl Rahner and E.Schillebeeckx, on the initiative of the publisher P.Brand, the journal Concilium continue its mandate to disseminate critical theology internationally. Concilium remains one of the most widely read theological journals in the world, with some 6000  subscriptions, and over 2,000 additional copies sold per year.

Concilium allows broadcasting in several languages reflections of theologians from five continents, in contextual, systematic and pastoral theology, biblical studies and ethics. The Foundation has its initial establishment in the Netherlands, which ceased operations in 2007, and the secretariat of the journal was transferred to Madras, India, where the current president, Dr. Felix Wilfred, ensures its direction.

Published five times a year, Concilium is now distributed in six languages, including English (SCM-Canterbury Press), German (MatthiasGrünewald-Verlag), Italian (Queriniana Editor), Portuguese (Editora Vozes), Spanish (Editorial VerboDivino).  It has recently added a Croatian language edition (Ex Libris and Synopsis Publications). Interrupted in French following the bankruptcy of a publishing house, the French edition is selectively taken up by Editions Bayard, who since 2005 published three issues.

Every year, Concilium directors and editorial board members hold their annual meeting in different academic locations, while organizing a symposium. The proceedings are often published the following year in the Journal.  In 2009 the board opted for a change of format, offering a large section of feature articles, but always accessible to an informed readership and a FORUM section where can be published debates, news and other brief articles.   Thanks to our thousands of subscribers for their interest and support. Thank you to the hundreds of contributing authors, who for more than forty-five years had made the journal Conciliumind dispensable in Catholic theology.

In these critical times for the church and the world, Concilium intends to play a creative and transforming theological role. This it wants to do by drawing from the source of the Gospel and allowing itself to be inspired by the innovative spirit and vision of Vatican II. Therefore it takes up many contemporary issues that touch upon the life of the church and of the world. This is what two stalwarts of Concilium foundation- Edward Schillebeeckx and Karl Rahner wrote:

Concilium Journal is deliberately based on Scripture and the history of salvation. At the same time it has the humble courage to confront the new problems arising from the human conditions of today. It seeks, on the basis of our contemporary situation, a better understanding of the Word of God for man and the world of our time. A theological insight of this kind is necessary for anyone who, acting in faith, is actively engaged in the Church and in the world.

Concilium’s pages bring a fresh theological breath, creative insights and perspectives. No wonder then that it continues to find support among forward looking theologians, innovative pastoral practitioners and all those Christians who wish to enter into dialogue with diverse societies, with religions and cultures in every part of the world.
